In substantive or content editing, I work to improve the general clarity and flow of the text by eliminating wordiness, redundancy, clichés, and inappropriate word choices, replacing passive constructions with active ones, smoothing transitions, rephrasing awkward passages, and reconstructing and moving sentences and paragraphs.
Because this is a more extensive editing process than proofreading or copy editing, the text must be submitted in an editable electronic format (not paper, fax, or PDF). If you have a paper document that requires substantive editing, I offer an additional
transcription service that may be useful.
Note the first: Please don't send me school papers for substantive editing. If you're turning it in for a class, I can
check your spelling/grammar/punctuation/formatting, but my policy is not to edit academic work for content.
Note the second: If you're an aspiring fiction writer, I highly recommend that you work on developing your craft rather than paying to have someone edit your work; the former is much more likely to help you get published. (If you're planning to self-publish, however, having your manuscript
copy edited before printing is essential.)
