In substantive or content editing, I work to improve the general clarity and flow of the text by eliminating wordiness, redundancy, clichés, and inappropriate word choices, replacing passive constructions with active ones, smoothing transitions, rephrasing awkward passages, and reconstructing and moving sentences and paragraphs. The result is a shorter, more fluid, and more concise text.

Because this is a more extensive editing process than proofreading or copy editing, the text must be submitted in an editable electronic format - not paper or PDF.

Note 1: Please don't send me school papers for substantive editing. If you're turning it in for a class, I can check your spelling/grammar/punctuation/formatting, but my policy is not to edit the content of academic work.

Note 2: If you're an aspiring fiction writer, I highly recommend that you invest in improving your craft (e.g., taking a class, attending a workshop, or joining a critique group) rather than paying for substantive editing. I can help you with copy editing if you feel that your work needs a final polish, but the kind of revision described above is a key step in developing your personal style, and I would advise against outsourcing that.
